Offline … Just Like The Rest Of ‘em
It became increasingly apparent to me over a trip back east to NYC - and then down the coast of California the week after that people live their lives OFF the Internet.
Yeah, they may check email. Go to a few sites to “find stuff” … but there’s a huge wake up call out there for marketers: The Internet may be filled with millions of people — but these people don’t LIVE on the internet. They go about their lives, drive their cars, shop in local markets, go to the beach, theater, dinner. They are not waiting to bump into your brand online. And if they do, 99% of the time it was by accident.
Some sites try to get people off the Internet (Meetup), some try to keep you glued to it (Yahoo!). Some just want you to find what you’re looking for (Google).
At the end of the day, though, I’ll repeat it again: It’s what people talk about at dinner that matters most in life. It’s not what they click on.
